Cardinals Capture Classic Crown in 67-60 win over Bowdoin

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team captured the 2015 Hampton Inn/Microtel Cardinal Classic crown with a 67-60 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon.

This is the second straight Cardinal Classic crown for Plattsburgh State, who defeated Lebanon Valley College in the 2013-14 Tournament.

The Cardinals had great production from their senior class on Saturday.

Allie Taylor led all Cardinals with 16 points. The Hannibal, N.Y. native also tallied six rebounds and three assists in the winning effort.

In addition to Taylor's effort, the Cardinals saw three other players finish in double figures. Misha Green added 13 points on a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe. Stephanie Linder and Devona Paul had near double-doubles, both finishing with 14 points and nine boards. Linder added three steals while Paul notched a pair of blocks.

The Cardinals faced stiff competition in the form of a Polar Bear team that held the Cardinals to 29-percent shooting in the first half of play.

Polar Bear forward Shannon Brady had been named by D3hoops.com as a pre-season All-American, and certainly had moments throughout the weekend to reason why she was chosen as such.

There was a great crowd on hand in Saturday's matchup, partly due to the homecoming of Bowdoin guard Marle Curle, Plattsburgh native and daughter to Plattsburgh State men's basketball coach Tom Curle.

Curle had a great weekend showing, finishing Saturday's championship game with 16 points, six boards and three dimes.

It was back and forth the majority of the contest between the Polar Bears and Cardinals. Ultimately the Cardinals found strength down the stretch, outscoring Bowdoin in the third and fourth quarters 44-36.

In the consolation contest, Clarkson University defeated Johnson State 73-67 on Devin Sorell's 33 points.

Sorell was named to the All-Tournament team, along with Brady and Curle from Bowdoin. Plattsburgh State's Taylor and Paul took the last two spots, with Paul also receiving MVP honors.

Bowdoin starts the season 1-1, while the Cardinals are off to a 3-0 start for the 2015-16 campaign.

The Cardinals will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, December 1, when they welcome the St. Lawrence Saints to Memorial Hall.
