PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team prevailed in a 2-0 victory over North Country rival the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Saturday in the SUNYAC Tournament Quarterfinal match.
It was a scoreless first half at the Field House Complex that saw the Cardinals dominate in shots by a margin of 9-0. Plattsburgh State found quality chances, but sent shots wide or directly at Bears goalie Jesse Kohler.
It was the second half when the Cardinals broke the scoreless tie. Junior Forward
Alexis Archilla knotted his 17
th goal of the year in the 65
th minute. The Cardinals passing game created a brilliant opportunity in the Bears 18 yard box. As a result, Cardinal forward
Nicholas Laurent received a ball in the six yard box and sent a pass in pass a diving Kohler. Archilla crashed the scene to bury the empty netter.
Archilla's 17 goals are a team high. He also leads all of the SUNYAC in goals and points with 37.
Plattsburgh State received an insurance goal in the 82
nd minute from Laurent to help seal the win over Potsdam. Cardinal midfielder
Fabian Chaparro sent a through ball over the top of the Bears defense. It was a race between Laurent and Kohler to see who could get a touch first. Laurent's speed proved to be too much as he tipped the ball over Kohler and then sent a shot into a wide open net. The goal was Laurent's 7
th this year.

Mitchell Jordon made two saves in the winning effort. Kohler finished the game with seven stops.
The SUNY Potsdam Bears finished its season with a record of 10-8-1. With the win Plattsburgh State improves to 14-3-3 and advances to the SUNYAC Semifinal match to be played on the road against Oneonta on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
