PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 23 ranked Plattsburgh State men's soccer team (9-1-2, 1-0-2 SUNYAC) picked up its first conference win of the season in a 4-1 victory over the Oswego State Lakers (4-5-1, 1-3 SUNYAC) on Saturday.
The Cardinals came into the contest having tied with SUNYAC foes SUNY Cortland and SUNY Potsdam in their first two games of conference play.
Cardinal forward
Alexis Archilla broke open the scoring in the 27
th minute when
Ethan Votraw sent a cross into the Laker 18 yard box. Archilla was able to head the ball near post past Oswego goalie Todd Lawson for his team leading ninth goal of the season.
Oswego would tie the game just after halftime on a Bernard Osei goal. Osei found the ball bouncing near top of the 18 yard box and volleyed a shot past Cardinal Goalie
Mitchell Jordon.
The tie would not last long however. Less than a minute later Plattsburgh State's
Chris Bowden sent a cross deep into Laker territory. Teammate
Nicholas Laurent beat Lawson to the ball and was able to one time a shot and put the Cardinals in front 2-1.
Plattsburgh added to its lead in the 74
th minute on an
Ethan Votraw bomb from roughly 40 yards out. Votraw found space in the midfield and ripped a shot that caught Laker goalie Lawson off guard. Lawson got a hand on the ball but was not able to make the save.
The final goal of the game came on a free kick near the half field line. Cardinal defender
Clay Sherman took the free kick and sent the ball on goal. Votraw went in for the service and managed to block the view for Lawson, who came out to secure the ball. Sherman's shot fell right past Lawson for his first goal of the season.
The Cardinals outshot Oswego 14-10.
Mitchell Jordon made two save in net for Plattsburgh State.
The Cardinals will be on the road next weekend when they visit SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Oneonta.
