Cardinals, Blue Devils Draw Even to Start Homecoming Weekend

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team (11-1-3, 3-0-3 SUNYAC) couldn't find its groove in 2-2 tie against State University of New York Athletic Conference foe, the Fredonia State Blue Devils (2-9-3, 1-3-2 SUNYAC) on Friday.

In game that saw 30 total fouls, four yellow cards and a red card, it was difficult for either team to find a rhythm and put away the deciding goal.

The Blue Devils struck early on the first of Ryan Keller's two goals of the night. Keller received the ball at the top of the 18 yard box and sent a shot that deflected off the Cardinal defense and landed in the back of the net.

Plattsburgh State midfielder Ethan Votraw evened the score in the 15th minute on a volley from just outside the 18 yard box. Blue Devil goalie Jeremy Bari barely moved as the ball seemed to be headed over the net. However Votraw's shot bent downward, found the back of the net and leveled the game at one.

Keller netted his second goal in the 26th minute and it was a 2-1 game at halftime. Cardinals lead in shots 7-4 at the break.

Headed into the 71st minute it was still a 2-1 game until Cardinal forward Alexis Archilla received a through ball from Votraw and had a break in on Bari. Archilla sent a low shot far post that beat the diving Bari. The equalizer is Archilla's team leading 14th goal of the year.

The Cardinals continued to pressure throughout the second half and both overtime periods, leading in shots 21-7 for the contest.

Plattsburgh State goalie Mitchell Jordon made two saves while Bari made five. Both keepers allowed two goals.

The Cardinals next match will be on Saturday when they welcome the Buffalo State Bengals to the Field House Complex at 1 p.m.
