Cardinals Come Up Short Against New Paltz, Oswego State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. The Plattsburgh State volleyball team wrapped up SUNYAC Pool Play at Memorial Hall on Saturday by falling in matches against New Paltz (25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20) and Oswego State (25-22, 25-17, 25-16).
 
The Cardinals finished the weekend 0-3, dropping to 7-14 on the season and 1-5 in SUNYAC matches.
 
MATCH ONE: New Paltz 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20)
The early 10 a.m. start didn't bode well for the Cardinals, who swung at a .026 clip in the first set and just .075 for the match.
 
The Cardinals looked their best in the second, limiting the Hawks to just 11 kills while getting 14 of their own.
 
Plattsburgh State was kept quiet the final two sets and was unable to come up with any consistent offensive pressure against a New Paltz squad that posted 97 digs and 15 blocks.
 
Sam Colombo racked up 14 kills and 10 digs. Noelle Miller added 11 kills while Sydney Gabriel contributed with 16 digs and 30 assists.
 
SUNYAC-leading average kills leader Becca Borquist led the Hawks with 17 kills and 18 digs. Rachel Pierson had 29 digs, with Maddie Zwikl dishing out a game-high 51 assists.
 
MATCH TWO: Oswego State 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16)
The Cardinals couldn't get anything going as the Lakers put the match away in just over an hour.
 
Sam Colombo had eight kills and 10 digs to lead Plattsburgh State. Izzy Ruff chipped in with nine digs, with Jordynne Ales adding eight. Sydney Gabriel finished with seven digs and 19 assists.
 
The Lakers were led by Emma Moriarty, who had 15 terminations on 26 attempts, hitting on .423 of her shots. Ariel Murawski and Kelsey Dillon posted 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Rachael Ruggaber collected 22 digs, and Lauren Edwards handed out 23 assists.
 
Plattsburgh State's final home match of the year will come on Thursday evening when St. Lawrence comes to Memorial Hall for a non-conference match. It will mark the final home matches for seniors Emily Miller and Amanda Robinson. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
