PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team got what they were looking for Sunday evening, picking up the weekend sweep over the Lakers today 5-1.
The majority of the first period was slow but Melissa Sheeran would break the scoreless tie with just 54 seconds left in the period to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead going into the locker room.
The Cardinals would erupt in the second period scoring four goals in the middle stanza.
Giovanna Senese would score an absolute beautiful short-handed goal 30 seconds in. Senese would deke a defender before roofing a back hand short side over the shoulder of Oswego State goalie Tori Trovato
Bridget Balisy would make it 3-0 Plattsburgh State collecting a rebound on the far post off a Jordon Lipson shot.
Senior, Alyssa Parke would go coast-to-coast slicing the Oswego State defense before dangling Trovato and finding the back of the net.
With 2:11 remaining the second period Shannon Stewart would make it five-straight for the Cardinals heading into the final period.
Despite having a 15-4 shot advantage in the third period it was the Lakers finding the only goal in the final twenty minutes. Kendall Appelbaum would connect with net on a slap shot from her right defensive spot.
That was the first time the Lakers have scored since the 2010-11 season, snapping a 499:42 minute scoreless streak.
Camille Leonard got the nod again for Plattsburgh State in net finishing the day with 12 saves on 13 shots. Trovato would get the loss for the Lakers playing the first 30:32 of the game before getting pulled after allowing her fourth goal. Yesterday's starter Bridget Smith would come on in relief for the final 29:28 gathering 20 saves on 21 shots.
Plattsburgh State moves to 15-0-2 and 11-0-0 in ECAC West play for a marquee showdown against Elmira next weekend in the Stafford Ice Arena. Both the Cardinals and Elmira are undefeated in the ECAC West as each team tries to claim the top-spot in the standings.
Plattsburgh State and Elmira are No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest USCHO.com poll. The Cardinals won the first battle earlier in the season against the Soaring Eagles at home in the Cardinal Panther Classic.
