Linder's Career Night, Paul's Double-Double Help Cards Come Back for 60-53 Win at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Trailing by eight points after the first half of its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road bout at The College at Brockport, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team began their comeback by relying heavily on one particular ingredient that the Golden Eagles lacked.

That important piece to the winning equation was Stephanie Linder.

Linder, a junior out of Cadyville, N.Y., was almost unstoppable in the final 20 minutes of play as she registered 19 of her game and career-high 23 points on 7-for-8 shooting to lead the Cardinals to a 60-53 come-from-behind triumph over Brockport at Jim & John Vlogianitis Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Aside from Linder's career night, Plattsburgh State leaned heavily on the services of junior forward Devona Paul. The Blauvelt, N.Y., product didn't disappoint either, turning in a monstrous double-double of 18 points and a career and game-high 17 rebounds.

Shooting at a 37.5-percent (21-for-56) clip for the game, the Cardinals turned their offensive production up a notch in the final 20 minutes, canning 46.2-percent (12-for-26) of their attempts from the field while limiting the Golden Eagles to a dismal 7-for-28 (25-percent) showing.

Thanks in large part to Paul's monster effort on the glass, the Cardinals owned a 49-28 rebounding advantage over their conference foes from western New York and improved to 8-8 and 5-4 in SUNYAC games. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles slipped to 5-11 and 3-6 in league play.

Aside from ties, Brockport held the lead for all but 65 seconds through the course of the first frame. An old-fashioned three-point play from Paul made matters 3-2 Plattsburgh State 1:28 in.

Shanielle Chambers headed to the free throw stripe with 3:58 to go in the half and pulled the Cardinals within two, 22-20, but the home team closed the frame on an 8-2 surge with all of the points scored by Olivia Suhr and Hannah Rehbaum.

Led by Linder and Paul, the Cardinals began the second half in a positive manner as the pair accounted for all but three points during a 16-2 run through the first 6:38 of the deciding frame. It was senior Brittany Marshall who handed the visitors their first lead since early in the opening stanza when her long ball made things 35-32.

Plattsburgh State's second-half lead would balloon to as many as eight points after Jax Miller's two-point jumper made matters 45-37 with 8:42 to go. The Golden Eagles, though, put their own scoring tandem on display in order to surge ahead for the final time.

Suhr joined forces with Marissa Pike and the pair pushed their team on an 11-2 run and grabbing their final lead when Pike's second long ball of the run made the score 48-47 with 6:46 to go.

Fortunately, Allie Taylor was there to wrest control of the game from the home team. The junior's jumper keyed a 5-0 Cardinal run to put the visitors on top the rest of the way.

Clinging to a three-point lead after Paul laced a pair of free throws with 2:49 remaining, Marshall came up with a pivotal steal and Misha Green and Paul kept an extended Plattsburgh State possession alive by combining for three offensive rebounds before Linder provided the dagger with a mid-range jumper to make the score 56-51 with 1:26 to go.

A 4-for-6 stretch at the free throw line in the final 1:26 and some hard-nosed defense helped the Cardinals secure their eighth triumph of the season.

Suhr finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles while Faith Welsh delivered a team-high 15 points to Brockport's final point total.

Marshall finished with five points, two steals and a game-high seven assists for the Cardinals.

A two-game revenge series is next up for the Cardinals as they return to Memorial Hall to begin the second run through in SUNYAC play. On Friday night, Plattsburgh State will cross paths with Buffalo State and the Cardinals will shoot for a 2014-15 series split with the Bengals when the two squads tip off at 7:30 p.m.
