PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A gut-wrenching loss to Buffalo State at the Bengals' home digs had the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team eager to face their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rivals in a rematch.
That Memorial Hall revenge game played out exactly as the Cardinals wanted it to.
Devona Paul continued her mastery of Buffalo State, resetting her career-high by pouring in a game-best 24 markers and leading the Cardinals in their 93-63 demolition of the Bengals in Memorial Hall on Friday night.
Paul, whose previous career high of 23 came in the Cardinals' 2013-14 Memorial Hall triumph over the Bengals, hit 11 of her 16 field goals attempts and chipped in three of Plattsburgh State's 10 blocked shots. She was merely one of the anchors, though, in Plattsburgh State's exceptionally strong defensive effort.
Thanks to their largest win of the season, Plattsburgh State improves to 9-8 and 6-4 in SUNYAC games, moving up to fourth place in the conference standings in the process. It was the Cardinals' second lopsided home win over Buffalo State in as many seasons after Plattsburgh State laid a 94-68 result on the Bengals in the 2013-14 regular season finale.Â
In the one-sided 40-minute affair, the Bengals (9-9, 6-5 SUNYAC) found themselves declawed at the offensive end as the Cardinals allowed their SUNYAC rivals to put in just 19 of their 75 field goal attempts (25.3-percent). On the other side of things, all the home team did was put together its finest offensive showing of the year.
Plattsburgh State shot a season-high 51.4-percent (38-for-74) from the field and had five players sling in 10 or more points. Sophomore Jessica Dolan enjoyed a career evening, too, going off for 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.
Jax Miller and Brittany Marshall each added 11 points while Allie Taylor finished with 10 and tied for game-high rebounding honors with Dolan. As a team, the Cardinals boasted a 60-42 edge on the boards.
At no point during the important conference bout did the Cardinals see themselves trailing, as Stephanie Linder canned the first five points on a layup and the first of three Plattsburgh State deep balls of the night.
Linder's personal outburst was just the beginning of the Cardinals' larger 23-8 run over the first 7:37 of the game. During that stretch, Paul conjured up nine points while Marshall added five of her own. Capping the run with a layup was senior Yazmin Lewis who finished the game with nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
Plattsburgh State carried a 49-28 edge into the halftime break and as the deciding frame wore on, the Cardinals saw their lead expand to as many as 35 points after Miller knocked in a pair of free throws which made the score 84-49.Â
Shanielle Chambers enjoyed the finest game of her career, too. The Potsdam, N.Y., product had a final stat line of five points, three rebounds, four blocked shots, two assists and a steals - all of which were career highs.Â
The Cardinals' ball movement was very impressive as they racked up 26 assists on 38 made field goals.Â
Niasha Houpe finished with a team-high 14 points for the Bengals while Keyonte Edwards added 11.Â
Looking to win its third straight game in Memorial Hall, the Cardinals will be at it again on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Fredonia State to Plattsburgh. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.Â
