OSWEGO, N.Y. – An extra-point win in their opening set of the day didn't help the Plattsburgh State volleyball team earn its first SUNYAC win of the season as the Cardinals were on the wrong end of identical 3-1 scores against Oswego State and Fredonia State at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday.

Plattsburgh State falls to 4-9 and 0-3 in conference play with the setbacks.

MATCH ONE – Oswego State 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-13, 25-19)

The Cardinals got off to a slow start to say the least before coming back from as many as eight points down to take the first set.

Oswego State jumped out to an 8-3 lead as part of a 15-7 run to open the match before the Cardinals began to chip away at the Lakers' advantage. A termination from Emily Miller followed by a Laker attack error pulled the Cardinals within six, but Oswego State quickly regained its balance and went up 17-10.

Responding with an 11-4 surge to take control of the set, the Cardinals took a 21-20 lead. During the run, senior Maggie Schrantz chipped in a pair of service aces and a kill while four Laker miscues added another four Plattsburgh State points.

The squads went on to trade points with the Lakers eventually taking a 25-24 lead, but the Cardinals' front row stepped up to close out the match. Schrantz and Emily Miller combined for a block before Miller added a solo rejection as part of a 3-1 run to put the set away.

After the first set, though, the Lakers' hitters really began to fire on all cylinders. After taking an 8-7 lead in the second frame, Plattsburgh State saw Oswego go on an 18-6 run to close out the set and knot matters at one.

During that extended surge, the Lakers put down four service aces and Stephanie Bailey added five kills.

Again, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the third frame. Kills from senior Meghan Clifford and Miranda Sheffer were part of a quick 3-1 run for the Cardinals. Just as what occurred in the second set, though, Plattsburgh State's lead was rather short-lived.

Oswego State embarked on a 16-3 run to seize control of the set – and the game – and put the clamps on the Cardinals' offense. The Lakers hit .433 in the third frame and limited Plattsburgh State to a mark of .105.

Hanging tough in the final set of the match, the Cardinals used a kill from Noelle Miller to tie things up at 14, but a 6-1 Oswego State run led predominantly by Bailey took the wind out of the Cardinals' sails.

The Cardinals closed to within three, 20-17, but a 5-2 run featuring terminations by three different Lakers put the match in the books.

Melissa Wickers and Schrantz put down seven kills each for the Cardinals, but Plattsburgh State had no answer for Bailey who amassed 19 kills on 25 attempts for an impressive attack percentage of .720. Jessica Long added 12 additional kills for the Lakers.

MATCH TWO – Fredonia State 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21)

Double-digit kill performances by both Schrantz (12) and Sheffer (11) still weren't enough to produce the Cardinals' first SUNYAC triumph of the Jake Bluhm coaching era as Plattsburgh State fell in another four-set conference tilt.

Upon falling in a closely contested first set, the Cardinals came back to knot the match at one set apiece thanks to a 25-23 tally in the second frame. The Blue Devils, though, had all the answers in the final pair of sets.

Fredonia State upped its efficiency on the offensive end of the court in the third frame, hammering down 17 kills on 33 attack attempts. With only two errors in the set, the final hitting percentage for Fredonia State was an impressive .455 in the third.

The Cardinals were able to up the ante on the defensive end in the fourth set, but the Blue Devils ultimately earned the victory by edging Plattsburgh State 25-21 in the deciding frame.

For the match, the Cardinals swung at a clip of .173 and Sheffer put the wraps on another good match by completing a double-double bid with 11 digs. The freshman also added a pair of service aces.

Both Jordynne Ales and Clifford came up with a team-best 12 digs. Clifford, a senior, added a team-high 28 assists.

Fredonia State was led by Sarah Madison and her match-high 15 kills. Madison added 12 digs to complete her double-double. Paulina Rein (13) and Kristen Stanek (10) joined Madison in double-digit kills territory.

Jess DiChristopher had four of the Blue Devils' 12 service aces and Kelly Edinger passed out a match-high 48 assists.

Plattsburgh State will enjoy a two-week break before returning to SUNYAC play. The Cardinals' next match will take place on Friday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles. The conference fracas is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
