PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After spending the last three weekends on the road, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team returned home to defeat Fredonia State, 4-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals went out in front with just 5:30 gone in the game when Dillan Fox's wraparound shot deflected off the skate of a Fredonia State defender and past Blue Devils' goaltender Jeff Flagler to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh State extended the lead to 2-0 when Kevin Emmerling gathered his own rebound and set a shot wide of Flagler but Dakota Mason was at the back door to bang the puck home at the 11:24 mark of the second period. Alex Jensen gave the Cardinals a three-goal lead with his ninth of the year at 14:34 of the middle frame from Fox.
Alex Brenton opened the third period with Plattsburgh State's fourth of the night, sending a shot from a sharp angle through the legs of Flagler. Rich Botting picked up an assist on Brenton's ninth of the season at the 2:53 mark.
Fredonia State broke up the shutout when Zach White took a feed from Ryan Wilkinson and fired a shot high over the glove side of Plattsburgh State goaltender Mathieu Cadieux with 11:43 left in the game but that was as close as the Blue Devils would come.
Cadieux stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced to improve to 16-3-2 overall. Flaglar recorded 29 saves in the loss for the Blue Devils.
With the win, Plattsburgh State moves to 17-3-2 on the year and 10-1-2 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia State drops to 7-10-4 overall and 4-5-3 against conference opponents.
The Cardinals remain on top of the SUNYAC standings with 22 points while Geneseo holds steady in second with 18 points after a 3-2 win at Brockport. Oswego defeated Morrisville, 9-2, to move into a third-place tie with Buffalo State after the Bengals played to a 1-1 tie at Potsdam. The Lakers and the Bengals have 15 points apiece.
Plattsburgh State returns to action Saturday night when the Cardinals host Buffalo State at 7 p.m. The Cardinals will take the ice in special edition "Shamrock" jerseys that will be autographed and auctioned off immediately after the conclusion of Saturday's game. All proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit Hockey Coaches Care.
