Fifth 20-Win Season in Curle Era Comes by Way of 87-63 Whipping of Fredonia State

A career-high 26 points from Edward Correa led the Cardinals' charge on Friday night.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Prior to the Tom Curle coaching era, no Plattsburgh State men's basketball team had succeeded in reaching the 20-win plateau.

In the 11 years since Curle has occupied the center seat, the Cardinals have gone on to accomplish that feat five times – the most recent of which occurred on Friday night.

Sophomore three-point specialist Edward Correa poured in a game and career-high 26 points and John Perez added an 11-point 14-rebound double-double as the Cardinals locked up the No. 2 seed for the SUNYAC Tournament by blasting Fredonia State 87-63 in Memorial Hall on Friday night.

Other stars for the Cardinals included Shavar Fields – who pumped in 18 points – and Chris Manning – who dished out a game-high 10 assists. Plattsburgh State, which is receiving votes in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, ups its record to 20-4 and 14-3 in the SUNYAC while the Blue Devils fall to 6-18 and 3-14 in league tilts.

Playing in what could have been the second-to-last home game of his career, Perez came out with intentions to take over the game. The Haverstraw, N.Y., product scored five of the first eight Plattsburgh State points and took to the sky to secure five rebounds in the first 4:28 of action.

Correa showed total disregard for the Blue Devils' defensive scheme, splashing back-to-back long balls to push the Cardinals' edge to 15-7 with 14:06 remaining in the opening frame.

Instead of putting the petal to the metal, the Cardinals allowed their offense to sputter just as Fredonia State began firing on all cylinders. Led by the high-flying Tyrone Clark and his compatriot Robert Lyles, the Blue Devils embarked on a 16-4 run to take a 23-19 lead with 7:18 to go in the opening frame.

The tandem netted all but four of the points during that stretch as the Cardinals only received offensive contributions courtesy of free throws by Fields and a layup from Xavier Thomas.

Snapping out of their scoring funk, the Cardinals turned to Perez whose layup hit keyed an 8-3 surge which put Plattsburgh State on top for good. Correa and Ezra Hodgson each fired and hit triples through the course of that stretch.

Correa, Fields, Perez and Alan Siergiej scored the remainder of the Plattsburgh State points in the opening frame to put the Cardinals up 42-34 at the half.

Much like what his senior teammate did the early stages of the first half, Fields came out eager to single-handedly increase the Cardinals' edge in the deciding frame. The Albany, N.Y., product poured in 12 of the first 20 Plattsburgh State point to give his team a 62-50 lead with 10:58 to go.

Fredonia received four straight markers from Lyles to trim the Plattsburgh State advantage to 62-54, but junior Mike Mitchell quickly brought the momentum back the Cardinals' corner with a pair of triples. Including Mitchell's long-range hits, six of the next seven Plattsburgh State field goals came from beyond the arc.

The final stat line for Correa read that the sophomore had slung in eight of his 13 attempts from long range while dishing out three assists to go along with a blocked shot, a rebound and a steal. With Perez's 14 rebounds leading the way, Plattsburgh State held a 45-32 edge on the glass over the Blue Devils.

Lyles finished with a team-high 20 for Fredonia State while Clark added 16.

Plattsburgh State will put the wraps on its 2013-14 regular season when they host Buffalo State at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Prior to tip-off, the Cardinals will honor the contributions of their four seniors.
