A Big Third Period Pushes the Cardinals Past Morrisville, 5-2

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – For the second-straight night the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team faced-off with Morrisville State as Saturday night proved to be no different than Friday as the Cardinals skated to a 5-2 victory.

The Cardinals got on the board first when Kevin Emmerling scored his third of the season 4:24 into the opening period.

Morrisville would respond though with exactly one minute left in the first period when team-leader in points Darren Young would add to his total. Young collected a Layne Martin pass in the slot before beating Cardinals goaltender Spencer Finney.

As the game would go back and forth Anthony Calabrese would score his first of the season as he jammed one home 5:31 into the second period.

Sophomore Kyle Hall took an initial shot that rang the crossbar before a loose puck scrum would take place in front of the net. Calabrese skated down from his defensive blue-line position to snag the puck and light the lamp.

However, just like the first period the Mustangs would respond late into the second period when for the second-straight night Joseph Santino would find the back of the net. Santino leads the Mustangs with a team-high six goals on the season.

The third period belonged to the Cardinals though, as they outscored the Mustangs 3-0 in the final stanza to remain perfect on the season.

Senior Michael Cassidy tallied two in a minute and thirteen second span.

His first goal came 3:13 into the third period as he did it himself on an unassisted goal. Then for his encore and to prevent Morrisville from tying the game for the third time he capped off a two on one short-handed goal with fellow line-mate Michael Radisa picking up the assist.

Emmerling would close the night just like how it started as the junior netted his second goal of the game with 2:19 left in regulation.

Finney finished Saturday with 15 saves as Steven Dombrosky started in net again for the Mustangs making 51 saves in the loss.

Plattsburgh 7-0-0 (7-0-0 SUNYAC) will now face two non-conference opponents for the first time this season on Friday and Saturday as they hit the road to Middlebury, Vt. looking to win its second-straight PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut. Friday's matchup features the Cardinals and #3 Norwich at 4 p.m. Winner of Plattsburgh and Norwich will face the winner of Concordia (Minn.) and Middlebury at 7 p.m. on Saturday with the consolation game taking place beforehand at 4 p.m.
