Women’s Hockey Banner Night Leads to a 6-0 win over Chatham

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team added their newest addition into the Ronald B. Stafford ice arena Saturday evening raising their 2013-14 National Championship banner before skating to a 6-0 shutout over Chatham.

Plattsburgh dominated the Cougars right from the opening puck drop taking 49 shots to Chatham's 19. The Cougars hung tough early but fatigued set in as the Cardinals increased the amount of goals they scored in each period.

The opening goal for the Cardinals was credited to Melissa Ames but Katelyn Turk did all the dirty work, taking the puck coast-to-coast before attempting  a backhander that Cougar goalie Megan Buchanan fought off before being poked in by Ames.

In the second Bridget Balisy scored her first of two on the night as Shannon Stewart picked up an assist.

Two-time Rookie of the Week Kayla Meneghin kept her hot-streak adding two moreback-to-back goals Saturday as she now leads the Cardinals in points and goals.

Both her goals come on the special teams but on opposite units. Her first goal came on the power play in the second before starting the third period with an unassisted short-handed goal.

Then the captain defenseman Mia Favretto scored her first of the season 17 seconds before Bridget Balisy scored her second of the game to give the Cardinals a 6-0 advantage.

Ally Ross has started every game in net for the Cardinals as they improve to 4-0-1 (3-0-0 ECACW). The Red Lion, Pa., native made 19 saves picking up her first shutout of the season. Megan Buchanan suffered her first loss of the 2014-15 campaign making 43 saves in a losing effort.

Chatham is now 2-2-0 (0-1-0 ECACW) and will return to the Stafford Ice Arena Sunday at 1 p.m. to challenge the Cardinals again in search for the programs first win over Plattsburgh.
