PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Another night, another win as the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team remained unbeaten with a 4-1 triumph over Fredonia State.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first period after Kevin Emmerling and Josh Koerner each scored in the opening period.
Emmerling found the back of the net 3:37 in the first period as he scored off a rebound on his initial shot.
Koerner made his first start of the season for the Cardinals Saturday night and responded in a big way as he lit the lamp 11:03 in the first. From behind the net Connor Gorman found the sophomore in the right circle where Koerner one-timed it past Blue Devil goalie Chris Eiserman.
Mark Constantine would make it 3-0 for Plattsburgh in the second period as the senior scored an unassisted goal in front of the net.
Fredonia would open the scoring in the third period on a shorthanded goal in all unlikelihood. Stephen Castriota sniped one far side over the blocker of Cardinal goalie Spencer Finney to get Fredonia back within two.
That would be the only goal Fredonia would get all night though as the Cardinals would cap the game off with an empty net goal with 38 ticks left on clock from the stick of Connor Toomey. That was Toomey's second goal of the season as both goals have been provided by the empty net.
Finney picked up his third win of the season making 30 saves while Eiserman made 36 saves as the Cardinals fired 40 shots at the Fredonia net.
After Saturday night, Plattsburgh improved to 5-0-0 overall and in the SUNYAC and sits alone on top of the conference standings. Fredonia's early season struggles continue as the Blue Devils fall to 1-2-3 (0-2-2 SUNYAC) as they are still searching for their first conference win.
Plattsburgh will return to action Friday at 7 pm as they host Morrisville for a SUNYAC weekend doubleheader against the Mustangs.
