ONEONTA, N.Y. – After a scoreless 110 minutes the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team headed into a shootout with Oneonta with a trip to Geneseo for the SUNYAC Semifinals on the line.
Cardinal goalkeeper Danielle Schmitt came up huge making saves on the first two Red Dragon shots to propel the Cardinals to a 4-2 shootout victory.
The Cardinals converted all four penalties as Anissa Hartmann, Christen Averill, Jill Tardelli and Madeline Rattray each found the back of the net in that order.
In a game that was pretty even throughout had Oneonta holding a slight 12-8 shot advantage including a 2-0 edge in the two overtime periods. The Red Dragons also took six corner kicks to the Cardinals three.
Oneonta did have a golden chance to tally a goal in the first half as the Red Dragons received a free kick on top of the box. Laura Rolston sent a shot that hit the crossbar.
Along with her two saves in the shootout Schmitt made nine saves in regulation. Red Dragon goalkeeper Rori Stark made four saves before being relieved by Kelley Murphy right before the shootout.
With the win Plattsburgh was able to strike a bit of revenge on Oneonta after losing a heartbreaker in the regular season that saw the Red Dragons clipping the Cardinals in the last 47 seconds of the game by winning Saturday's thriller in a shootout.
Now the Cardinals have another tough task as they will have to go on the road in the SUNYAC Semifinals to face another team they suffered a road defeat too in Geneseo. Kick off is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
