Cardinals Blast Brockport 4-1 to Earn SUNYAC Tournament Bid BROCKPORT, N.Y. – It took all nine games for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team to clinch a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament bid but that is exactly what they did Saturday afternoon when they defeated Brockport 4-1.
With Saturday's win the Cardinals snapped a four year SUNYAC tournament absence.
Junior forward Devin McMahon got the Cardinals on the board early and often as she scored a hat trick on the day.
She netted her first goal in the 19
th minute when senior Ashley Pagano sent a pass into McMahon from the right side. McMahon would end up beating Golden Eagle goalkeeper Catherine Eliasson.
McMahon got her second goal in the 32
nd minute when she was Johnny on the spot burying a goal off a rebound.
The Cardinals would add one more before the end of the half to make it 3-0 as Lindsey Bushey scored her 11
th of the season. The freshman found herself alone in the middle of the box before striking a shot into the net.
Right at the 78
th minute, McMahon would score her hat trick goal to give the Cardinals a 4-0 edge. This time Anissa Hartmann found the Holbrook, N.Y., native when her pass linked up with McMahon from the left side of the field.
Brockport however would get on the board in the 85
th minute, when Chelsea Stahl scored her 12
th goal of the season. She dribbled it into the box beating the defense along with Cardinal keeper Jamie Favreau.
Plattsburgh outshot Brockport 21-13 and had a mild 3-1 corner kick advantage as well. Danielle Schmitt made six saves in 84 minutes for the Cardinals before being relieved by Favreau. Eliasson made six saves for the Golden Eagles in 78 minutes before being taken out by Laura Thompson who made a save of her own.
With the win the Cardinals earned three points to finish fifth in the SUNYAC standings and will be the five seed in the SUNYAC Tournament.
The Cardinals will return to the Field House Complex on Tuesday to play Norwich at 3 p.m. before hitting the road in rematch against Oneonta in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals. The Red Dragons defeated Plattsburgh earlier in the year 2-1 in the waning seconds of regulation.
