Late Goals From Buffalo State Stun Cardinals in 2-1 Overtime Loss

BUFFALO, N.Y. – For 89:57, it looked as though the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team was going to exit with Coyer Field with a win against Buffalo State.

Unfortunately, the Bengals had other ideas as they netted the game-tying goal with just three seconds remaining in regulation before punching in the game-winner in overtime which send the Cardinals to a 2-1 setback on Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 8-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play while the Bengals see their record improve to 5-9-1 and 2-4-1 in SUNYAC engagements.

Although Plattsburgh State owned a slim advantage in shots, 12-11, Buffalo State relied on some fine goalkeeping from both Hunter Hein and Ian Huntoon who combined to make seven saves through the course of the tilt.

The Cardinals had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when junior captain Ethan Votraw was dragged down by a Buffalo State player inside the box. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., product set up for his penalty kick, but his attempt late in the fifth minute was saved by Hein.

Between Archilla, Ian Spear and Fabian Chaparro, five total shots were sent at Hein in the opening 45-minute stanza but each one was turned aside. The Bengals, though, were denied on two occasions by Mitchell Jordon in the first half.

Clay Sherman nearly put the Cardinals in front for the first time in the 49th minute, but his header early in the second half glanced off of the Bengals' crossbar.

That shot by Sherman was one of only four Plattsburgh State would collect in the second half, but Archilla would finally give the Cardinals a lead. With 82:06 gone, the sophomore sent a hard shot at Huntoon. The Bengals' goalie made the initial save, but Archilla collected his own rebound and chipped in his 12th of the year, staking the Cardinals to a late 1-0 lead.

An offside call against the Cardinals early in the 90th minute gave the ball back to the Bengals, who set up for a corner kick at the 89:55 mark. The ball eventually found its way to the foot of Francesco Cardillo who buried a shot just inside the right post.

Cardillo would also receive the assist on the Bengals' game-winning score. His initial shot rattled off the Cardinals' crossbar, but went right to Keegan Lezama who punched the second try past Jordan at 99:42.

Jordon (8-7-1) finished with a pair of stops for the Cardinals. Both Plattsburgh State and Buffalo State attempted four corner kicks.

Currently sitting in a tie for sixth place in the SUNYAC standings, the Cardinals' goal is now to return home and finish off its slate of conference games with some wins in order to put them in the field for the SUNYAC Tournament. On Friday afternoon, the Cardinals will cross paths with SUNY Geneseo at the Field House Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
