PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team headed into its last weekend of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with playoff chances still alive but a 1-0 loss to Geneseo put the Cardinals in a whole for the postseason.
On a cold cloudy day the scoreboard didn't get used much as the lone goal was tallied in the 11
th minute when Neil Allen scored his first goal of the season.
The Knights were able to capitalize on back-to-back free kicks. Allen converted the second one from right outside the box with a well-placed shot that kissed off the right post before going in.
That would prove to be enough for the Knights as the Cardinals pressured all evening but couldn't find their rhythm as cross after cross would go to the wayside. Plattsburgh finished the game with seven offside calls to Geneseo's one.
On the day Plattsburgh outshoot the Knights 12-7 and owned a 7-5 corner kick edge. Knights' goalie, Logan Calvey collected five saves in the win as Cardinals keeper Mitchell Jordan finished with one.
The playoff picture did clear up today though as every team has one more SUNYAC game remaining on the schedule. Plattsburgh (8-8-1, 3-5-0 SUNYAC) currently finds themselves on the outside looking in as they are seventh with the top six teams qualifying for the SUNYAC Tournament.
The Knights were able to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC tournament with the win today as they are third, four points ahead of Plattsburgh who can only pick up at most three points tomorrow with a win.
Plattsburgh trails Brockport by three points who currently is fourth in the SUNYAC standings. Tomorrow's matchup is a win and get in game for the Cardinals against the Golden Eagles as a Cardinal win would put them in a tie with the Golden Eagles giving the tiebreaker to Plattsburgh in the head-to-head result.
The Cardinals also sit one point behind Oswego and own the tiebreaker over the Lakers if Oswego were to lose and the Cardinals came out with a tie against Brockport.
Plattsburgh returns to the Field House Complex tomorrow at 1 p.m. in what mine as well be the start of its SUNYAC tournament for the Cardinals as they face Brockport in a win or go home scenario.
