FREDONIA, N.Y. – Matching its highest scoring output of the season, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team made use of four goals from four different players to corral a crucial State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) victory as the Cardinals took to the road and blasted Fredonia State 4-0 on Friday afternoon.
Through the course of its third win in the last four outings, Plattsburgh State (8-6-1, 3-3 SUNYAC) placed constant pressure on the Blue Devils (8-2-4, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) and wound up outshooting the home squad by a 14-4 margin.
With the win, the Cardinals jumped up to fourth place in the SUNYAC standings.
A depleted Plattsburgh State back line stood its ground in the opening 45-minute frame, allowing the Blue Devils to attempt just one shot. It took a little over 15 minutes for the Cardinals to register the eventual game-winner as Ethan Votraw struck for his second goal of the season at the 15:03 mark.
The junior out of Plattsburgh, N.Y., beat Fredonia State netminder Sammy Torrelli (6-3-3) before sophomore goal-scoring sensation Alexis Archilla began the process of padding the Cardinals' lead.
Just over two minutes after Votraw buried the clincher, Archilla struck for his SUNYAC-leading 11
th goal of the season to make matters 2-0 Plattsburgh State.
Through the remainder of the half, the Cardinals continued to pepper the Blue Devils with shots as they amassed 10 total strikes in the opening 45 minutes.
The Cardinals' diversified offensive attack continued well into the deciding frame as both freshman Ian Spear (55:22) and Chris Bowden (75:04) recorded scores to account for the final margin of victory.
Junior Mitchell Jordon improved to 8-6-1 on the season by stopping two shots in 78:23 of work between the posts. For the final 11:37 of the game, Jordon relinquished his post to Matt Bonomini who didn't face a shot.
Torrelli finished with two saves for the Blue Devils and gave up three goals in 73:56. He was replaced by A.J. Grecco, who let in the fourth Plattsburgh State goal during his 16:04 of service at the mouth of the goal. Both teams attempted four corner kicks in the conference tussle.
Aiming to further enhance its standing in the 10-team conference, the Cardinals will make the journey to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on the Buffalo State Bengals with three more SUNYAC points up for grabs. The opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
