Vakos, VanGlahn Propel Plattsburgh State to 8-0 Victory at Utica

Chelsea VanGlahn scored a goal and added three assists as the Cardinals defeated Utica, 8-0, Friday night.

UTICA, N.Y. – Ali Vakos and Chelsea VanGlahn combined for eight points as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team skated to an 8-0 win at No. 10 Utica in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Division game Friday night.
 
Vakos gave the Cardinals (15-0-1, 8-0-0 ECAC West) an early lead when she tallied her sixth of the season just over five minutes into the game from Bridget Balisy and VanGlahn.
 
VanGlahn struck next at the 17:35 mark of the first from Vakos and Andrea Ziesmann to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Balisy joined in on the action 18 seconds later with her eighth of the year from Jordan Caldwell to hand Plattsburgh State a three-goal lead at the end of one period.
 
The Cardinals added two more in the second to extend the advantage to 5-0. Giovanna Senese stretched the lead to 4-0 at the 8:28 mark before Jenny Kistner put one on the board at 18:49 to make the lead a comfortable one for the visiting Cardinals.
 
With just a minute gone in the third, Balisy netted her second of the night from Katelyn Turk and VanGlahn to make it a 6-0 game. Alyssa Parke registered the next two, adding a power-play goal at 9:55 before rounding out the scoring with a short-handed marker at the 15:11 mark.
 
Vakos and VanGlahn each contributed a goal and three assists. Balisy finished the night with two goals and an assist while Ziesmann chipped in three assists.
 
Plattsburgh State outshot Utica, 44-20, which included a 23-9 margin in the first period. The Cardinals went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Pioneers went 0-for-3.
 
Sydney Aveson stopped all 20 shots she faced to improve to 11-0-1 overall and earn her ninth shutout of the season for the Cardinals. Jennifer Hamel recorded 36 saves in the loss for the Pioneers.
 
With the win, the Cardinals push their record to 15-0-1 on the year and 8-0-0 in league play. The Pioneers drop to 11-4-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the ECAC West.
 
The same two teams return to action tomorrow to close out the two-game series in a 3 p.m. matchup.
