Correa Nets 23, but Cardinals Can't Slow Down Brockport Late in 85-78 Loss

Sophomore Edward Correa established a new career-high with 23 points on Saturday afternoon.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – One of the more impressive bragging points that the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team held claim to was a home winning streak of nearly two years over SUNYAC opponents.

On Saturday afternoon, The College at Brockport showed they had absolutely no qualms about playing – and doing so at a high level – within the walls of the Cardinals' home digs.

Some costly turnovers by the Cardinals down the stretch and a game-high 32 points from Brockport's John Ivy sent Plattsburgh State to an 85-78 setback against the Golden Eagles. The game went down as the Cardinals' first non-winning outcome against a SUNYAC foe in venerable Memorial Hall since February 4, 2012.

Along with strong play from Ivy, the Golden Eagles (8-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) employed a 26-of-31 (83.9 percent) performance from the free throw stripe to come out on top. The Cardinals (8-3, 2-2 SUNYAC) shot a respectable 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field, including a 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) showing from long range.

The speed of the Golden Eagles was right up there with that of the Cardinals, making for a fast-paced brand of basketball for the entire 40-minute bout. Sophmore Edward Correa launched and connected on his first of seven three-pointers with just 18 seconds gone to account for the first points of the afternoon.

Unimpressed, Brockport shredded through the Cardinals' defensive schemes time and time again to take a 14-6 lead with just 5:02 gone in the SUNYAC altercation.

Finally able to set up their offense after a number of rapidly run possessions, the Cardinals succeeded in chipping away at the Golden Eagles' lead when Ezra Hodgson launched and drained a long ball of his own to make matters 14-9.

Back-to-back layups by Hodgson and Shamoy McIntosh further sliced into Brockport's lead before Correa really began to heat up from downtown. After tying things with a long ball, the Bronx, N.Y., product pulled up from long range on a fast break and dropped yet another triple, drawing the ire of the Golden Eagles.

Not quite finished with his long-range outburst, Correa sunk another triple to push Plattsburgh State's lead to 24-18 with 10:13 to go in the first half. McIntosh went 1-for-2 on a pair of free throws that resulted from a technical foul on Brockport's bench which gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the half – 25-18.

At that point, Brockport began to claw its way back into the thick of things after Brandon Caruthers and Ivy hit consecutive layups to trim the Cardinals' edge to 27-24.

Junior Alan Siergiej netted five straight points for the Cardinals to help them maintain a three-point cushion, but Ivy scored the final six points of the half for the Golden Eagles and sent both teams to the locker room with 38 points.

Ivy gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half, swindling the ball from Chris Manning and driving the length of the floor for a layup.

McIntosh saw his first long-range attempt of the second half splash through the home net before John Perez followed with a hard-driving layup that put the Cardinals on top 43-40 with 18:22 to go in the tilt.

The squads would go on to exchange leads before Hodgson put the Cardinals in front again after hitting both of his free throw attempts with 14:09 left. That allowed the home squad to gradually up its' edge to seven points, but the Golden Eagles would go on to shrink it to two on two occasions.

Plattsburgh State pushed it back to a seven-point margin after Xavier Thomas rose up and threw down a thunderous one-handed dunk off a great feed from Mike Mitchell. Another Correa long bomb made it 69-62 Plattsburgh with 8:01 left.
The frenetic pace of the game never let up, and Shavar Fields hit back-to-back buckets to hand Plattsburgh State its biggest edge of the tilt, 73-65, with 6:04 remaining.

Ivy, though, simply took over down the stretch. A personal 7-0 run by the Brockport scoring machine tied things at 75 and Patrick Coyle gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good when his tip-in with 2:35 remaining made it 78-77.

The Cardinals couldn't hit a field goal in the final 3:22, and a breakaway dunk by Clifton Lyerly seemed to only further demoralize the Cardinals, who were forced to foul to try and extend the game. Instead, the only saw the Golden Eagles ice the game from the charity stripe.

Correa reset his career high, pouring in 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting in the loss. Fields (15), McIntosh (12) and Hodgson (10) each finished up in double figures. Perez hustled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Caruthers complimented Ivy with an additional 21 points for the Golden Eagles.

Next Friday, the Cardinals will hit the road with the goal of beginning a new winning streak. Their first SUNYAC opponent of the two-game stretch will be New Paltz, with the Cardinals and Hawks scheduled to do battle at 8 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
