Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – For Plattsburgh State's Shamoy McIntosh, it felt especially good to be back home for the first time in over a month.
The reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week continued his string of impressive performances by creating a new career high with 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting while leading the Cardinals to a 97-85 triumph over SUNY Geneseo in Memorial Hall on Friday night.
Plattsburgh State improves to 8-2 and 2-1 in conference play while the Knights (6-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) experienced just their second letdown of the season. The loss, though, could hardly be blamed on Gordon Lyons, who put on a sparkling performance of his own with 29 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Cardinals blistered the nets, knocking down 53.8 percent (35-of-65) of their field goals including 12-of-24 (50 percent) trifectas. Geneseo kept up in terms of field goals (35-of-73, 47.9 percent), but accuracy issues from distance (6-of-23 , 26.1 percent) plagued the visiting squad.
McIntosh found himself racing to keep up with Geneseo's prolific post scorer Lyons, as the pair would put on a spectacular offensive showcase through the 40-minute bout. Hunkering down inside the painted area, the hard-working Lyons amassed the first six markers for the Knights on shots that occurred no more than three feet away from the rim.
A rare mid-range jump shot by senior Shavar Fields brought Plattsburgh State's lead to 10-6 with nearly six minutes in the books, but the Knights bounced back by embarking on a 7-0 scoring expedition that reached its endpoint when James McKenna set up shop beyond the arc and drained a triple for the visitors.
Geneseo retained its three-point edge as Connor Fedge made matters 15-12 after his short jumper in the painted area. That's when McIntosh began to heat up.
The Floral Park, N.Y., product called buckets on his second triple of the game before recapturing the Cardinals' edge with an exceptionally difficult mid-range jumper, making things 17-15 with 9:38 left in the opening frame.
Unfazed by the shooting prowess of McIntosh, Fedge went right back to work for the Knights, putting the finishing touches on a three-point play with a make at the charity stripe to give Geneseo its final lead of the conference dispute.
Ezra Hodgson had a hand on all five of the Cardinals' ensuing points, as he fed Fields for an easy layup before heading downtown and burying a long-range basket which gave Plattsburgh State a 22-18 lead with 8:13 to go.
Even though the Knights would never find themselves with the upper hand again, that didn't dampen the offensive efforts of Fedge and Lyons. The duo of Knights continued to exploit the Cardinals' lack of strong interior defense, combining to score 17 of the final 19 Geneseo points in the initial 20-minute period.
A pair of free throw makes by McIntosh gave the Cardinals their most sizable lead of the half at 34-27, but the assault on the painted area was unrelenting by the Knights, who trailed by just two (39-37) at the half. Lyons has already amassed 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting in the first 20 minutes alone.
McIntosh wasted little time before pulling the trigger in the second half as his long ball kicked off a 5-0 surge for the home squad in the opening 1:05 of the deciding frame. Senior John Perez, who was rendered mostly inert in the first frame, came to life in the second half. He cut through the Knights' interior defense to account for the next six Plattsburgh State points.
Still, the Knights wouldn't go away. Matt Curry whittled Plattsburgh State's lead to 50-48 after his short jumper before McIntosh took over again.
No matter where he decided to pull up from, the junior couldn't miss as he took off on a personal 10-0 scoring blitz that pushed the Cardinals' edge to 60-48 with 13:18 left. Slack-jawed, the Geneseo bench was finally grated a timeout to regroup.
After McIntosh's offensive outburst, the Knights took off on a 6-0 surge to cut the Cardinals' lead to 60-54 before McIntosh launched and buried yet another deep triple to put an end to Geneseo's offensive antics.
Humming along at an efficient rate, the Knights' offense continued to operate in spurts which shrank the Cardinals' edge time and time again. With 8:13 to go, Jonathan Cohen swished a corner long ball which cut the Plattsburgh State lead to 69-67, but it was Edward Correa who provided a response this time.
The sophomore kept the Cardinals afloat by pulling up and knocking down a pair of long-distance field goals of his own. After a Devon Anderson tip-in sliced the Plattsburgh State lead to 75-72 with 5:32 to go, Perez responded by netting five of the next seven points for the home squad. McIntosh ended the run with yet another jumper which made it a 82-72 ballgame with 4:02 to play.
After being content to operate as the distributor of the offense for most of the night, senior Chris Manning stepped out beyond the arc and swished his lone long ball to give the Cardinals an 87-77 lead with 2:15 showing on the clock. McIntosh sealed the deal with a breakaway jam that put Plattsburgh State up by 12 (91-79) with 1:10 remaining in the game.
Perez finished with a double-double as well, posting 17 points and a game-high 11 boards. Mike Mitchell (12), Correa (11) and Fields (10) also entered double-digit territory for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are now allowed to turn their attention to The College at Brockport, and a potential weekend league sweep, as the Golden Eagles venture into Memorial Hall for a 4 p.m. SUNYAC showdown on Saturday afternoon.Â
