PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team rallied for a 4-3 win over Skidmore in a non-conference game Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals (11-1-2) wasted little time getting on the board with Michael Radisa's third of the year just 43 seconds into the game. Radisa took a feed from Michael Cassidy, carried it up the left boards and sent a shot past Skidmore goaltender Jack McDonald to give Plattsburgh State some early momentum.
Skidmore (6-5-4) evened the score at the 12:12 mark of the first period when a turnover in the neutral zone allowed Marc Cibelli to beat Plattsburgh State goaltender Spencer Finney to make it a 1-1 game. The Thoroughbreds took the lead a little over four minutes later when another defensive breakdown led to Aaron Beck's first of the night from Ondrej Krajnak, making it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
Plattsburgh State fought back with a minute left in the opening stanza when Dakota Mason found the back of the net to send the team to their respective locker rooms tied at 2-2 at the end of one period. Brandon Beadow and Patrick Hermans were credited with assists on Mason's third of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Anthony Calabrese allowed the Cardinals to regain the lead at the 5:01 mark of the second on a blast from the right point for his first collegiate goal but Skidmore rallied again at the 9:09 mark when Beck scored his second of the evening to knot it up at 3-3.
Barry Roytman's power-play goal from Mason with 2:26 left in the second period served as the eventual game-winner. Roytman's shot from behind the goal line hit McDonald in the back and bounced in the net, giving the Cardinals a 4-3 lead, which they would hold on to through the third.
Plattsburgh State outshot Skidmore, 52-22, but the Cardinals continued to struggle on the power play, going 1-for-5 on the night. The Thoroughbreds went 0-for-6.
Finney, who was making his Cardinal debut, made 19 saves to earn the win. McDonald stopped 48 shots in the loss for Skidmore.
The Cardinals continue non-conference play tomorrow night as Steve Moffat's Castleton State Spartans make the trip to the Stafford Ice Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
