Cardinals Claim Potsdam Collegiate Village Cup Title with 6-0 Shutout of Lyndon State

Alexis Archilla was named the Collegiate Village Cup Most Valuable Player after scoring seven points in two games for the Cardinals.

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 11:38 to set the tone early Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals shutout Lyndon State by a score of 6-0 to claim the Potsdam Collegiate Village Cup Title.
 
Rookie Alexis Archilla continued to impress, scoring two of the Cardinals' first three goals. Ethan Votraw added his first of the year from Joe Aratari at 6:09 of the first half to help Plattsburgh State took a 3-0 lead into the half.
 
Freshman Chris Bowden tallied his first Cardinal goal at in the 54th minute of the second half to extend Plattsburgh State's lead to 4-0. Less than two minutes later at 56:39, Steve Zacharczyk made it a five-goal lead with his first of the year from Tom Greene.
 
Later in the half, freshman forward Luke VanDixhorn buried a rebound for the first goal of his career to round out the scoring for the Cardinals at 73:29.
 
The Cardinals' senior class provided solid leadership throughout the first weekend of play with all four figuring into the scoring in Saturday's win. In addition to Zacharczyk's goal and Aratari's assist, Greene contributed two helpers. Matt Hamilton also picked up an assist.
 
The Plattsburgh State offense controlled much of this game, outshooting the Hornets (0-2-0) by a 36-2 margin. The Cardinals (2-0-0) also drew seven corner kicks.
 
Mitchell Jordon got the start in net for the Cardinals, earning his first win despite not facing any shots in 59:05. Junior transfer Matt Bonomini stepped in for the final 30:55 but was also untested.
 
With three goals and an assist on the weekend, Archilla was named the Collegiate Village Cup Most Valuable Player. Hamilton, Fabian Chaparro and Nick Economou represented the Cardinals on the All-Tournament Team.
 
Plattsburgh State now turns its attention to Norwich, who the Cardinals will host Wednesday in the 2013 home opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Field House Turf Complex.
