Archilla Nets Game-Winner in Double Overtime to Give Men's Soccer 2-1 Win in Season Opener

Goalkeeper John Toper earned his first career win with six saves against Rutgers-Newark.
Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman forward Alexis Archilla made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut, scoring the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to lead the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team to a 2-1 win in double overtime against Rutgers-Newark in the opening game of the Collegiate Village Cup at SUNY Potsdam Friday afternoon.
 
Rutgers-Newark (0-1-0) grabbed an early lead as Anthony DeRisi took a pass in front from Raphael Araujo and walked around Plattsburgh State goalkeeper John Toper for the Scarlet Raiders lone goal with just 2:50 gone in the game.
 
The Cardinals (1-0-0) had a chance to draw even at 8:49 of the first half when Matt Hamilton was awarded a penalty kick, but Rutgers-Newark goalie Matt Broomall came up with the save to maintain the Scarlet Raiders' lead.
 
Newcomers led the Plattsburgh State attacker in the season opener as freshman defender Nick Economou scored the equalizer three minutes into the second half off a header shot for his first Cardinal goal. Archilla added an assist to pick up his first collegiate point.
 
Things started to come together for the Cardinals in the second half, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders by a 15-2 margin but Plattsburgh State was unable to take the lead as Broomall made four saves for Rutgers-Newark.
 
The two teams battled through a scoreless first overtime before Archilla buried the game-winner at 105:30 off a long pass from CJ Pourakis, giving the Cardinal rookie a three-point afternoon.
 
Each side drew five corner kicks apiece the Cardinals fired 25 shots and the Scarlet Raiders finished the afternoon with 13. Senior midfielder Matt Hamilton took a team-high seven shots for Plattsburgh State, including three shots on goal. Sophomore Ethan Votraw added six shots.
 
Toper recorded six saves to earn his first win for the Cardinals. Broomall made seven stops for the Scarlet Raiders in the loss.
 
The Cardinals continue play tomorrow at the Potsdam Collegiate Village Cup with an afternoon matchup against Lyndon State at 1:30 p.m. Rutgers-Newark will face the host team, Potsdam, at 11 a.m. in the other tournament matchup.
