POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team remained on the road Saturday, taking on Clarkson University in the 56th meeting between the two programs. After the two sides played to draws in each of the previous two seasons, Clarkson earned a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State came out strong in the opening half, holding Clarkson without a shot on goal while creating several opportunities of its own. The Cardinals broke through in the 20th minute when junior Mason Brown (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Senior Xavier Kamba (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) was credited with the assist, giving Plattsburgh State a 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals maintained their lead into halftime, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Clarkson came out of the halftime break with increased offensive pressure, outshooting Plattsburgh State, 12-0, in the second half. The Golden Knights found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Brody Frankowski scored off an assist from Bodie Smith.
Clarkson continued to pressure the Cardinals late, eventually taking the lead in the 89th minute. Smith scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Paul Rolland to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 advantage.
Plattsburgh State finished the contest with four shots, putting two on goal, while Clarkson recorded 15 shots with five on target. The Cardinals also held an advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 0-2 on the season. The Cardinals will look to bounce back when they return to the road on Wednesday, Sept. 9, taking on Norwich University.
