Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Tuesday night marked exactly two weeks since the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team had set foot on a basketball court for any sort of game-related activity.
If what resulted is the way the Cardinals are planning to play every time they get an extended break, they may want to wait a least a couple of days between each tilt this season.
Junior guard Jordan Moody poured in a game and career-high 23 points and the Cardinals (3-1) hit their first 11 field goal attempts as they went on to destroy Keene State (0-5) 109-76 in a non-conference bout in Memorial Hall.
Outscoring their New Hampshire foes 59-17 in the first 20 minutes of action, the Cardinals reached the 100-point plateau for the first time since Nov. 15, 2010, when they dropped that exact figure on Lyndon State within the confines of Lyndonville, Vt.
The opening 1:15 was the only stretch where the contest appeared even remotely competitive, as the squads traded baskets and found themselves knotted at four points each. From there, the Cardinals simply couldn't be stopped.
A 12-0 scoring blitz that took less than two minutes put Plattsburgh State up 16-4 while the Cardinals' defense held the Owls without field goal for 2:55. Keene State's towering 7'0 forward Nate Howard netted eight of the first 10 points for the visitors, but by the time that took place the Cardinals had obtained an insurmountable lead.
It took just seven minutes for the Cardinals to put 34 points on the board, and another strong defensive stretch kept the Owls stuck at eight points for 3:27. Every player on the floor for the home squad was on fire, with Shamoy McIntosh leading the way. The junior was the first of five Plattsburgh State players to hit double-digits, as he netted 10 of the first 32 points for his squad.
Senior Shavar Fields provided the biggest highlight of the opening surge as he threw down an electrifying fast-break dunk off a smooth pass from Moody.
Extending their lead to 36 points due to the ponderous defense displayed by the visitors, the Cardinals defense continued to smother the Owls, who were forced to wait 6:28 before scoring their next pair of points. Matt Sherlock canned a driving layup with 5:55 to go in the first half, but Plattsburgh State wasted no time in going back on the attack.
The Cardinals' massive lead ballooned to as many as 45 points, 57-12, by the time the first stanza was in the books.
Three minutes away from the midpoint in the deciding 20-minute frame, Fields twisted his way through a mass of Keene State defenders to hit a layup before making good on his free throw attempt to push the Cardinals' lead to 52 (81-29) – their largest of the night.
Enjoying their colossal advantage, the majority of the regular Plattsburgh State players gave way to the bench squadron on a number of occasions. Freshman Vaughn Dweck produced his first two collegiate points with 5:42 remaining in the tilt, slicing through the lead-footed Keene State defenders and rolling in a jumper in the painted area.
A little over a minute later, freshman Owen Mitchell received a sharp feed from Mike Mitchell and connected on his first field goal as a collegian – a short jump hook on the baseline.
Sophomore James Outlaw put in the 100
th point of the night for the home squad by knocking down a free throw with 3:19 to go.
Aside from Moody, Fields (16), Ezra Hodgson (13), McIntosh (15) and John Perez (11) all finished with at least 11 points. Perez hustled down a game-high 10 rebounds to complete his fourth double-double in as many games.
Howard, who led all of NCAA Division III Men's Basketball with 16 rebounds per game coming into the game, amassed a team-high 19 points for Keene State but was limited to just six boards.
Plattsburgh State simply scorched the nets, connecting on 56.3 percent (36-of-64) of their field goal attempts while limiting the Owls to a 38.7 percent (24-of-62) performance from the field. The Cardinals also enjoyed a 51-26 rebounding edge over their opponents and hit 30 of their 40 (75 percent) free throw attempts compared to a 24-of-33 (72.7 percent) night by Keene State.
With its 2013 home non-conference schedule in the books, Plattsburgh State shifts its focus to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Cardinals will hit the road for a pair of league tilts, beginning with an 8 p.m. bout at Oswego State on Friday before engaging in a rematch of the 2012-13 SUNYAC Tournament championship game at Cortland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
