MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Connor Gorman figured into all four goals as the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team held on for a 4-3 win at Morrisville in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Saturday night at the Morrisville State IcePlex.
After a lop-sided affair Friday night, Saturday proved to be an entirely different story. The two teams played a scoreless for the better part of two periods until Gorman's unassisted goal at the 18:56 mark of the second period gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh State's power-play unit started to click in the third period as the Cardinals scored two goals with a span on 19 seconds with the man-advantage. Dillan Fox scored his fifth of the year at 5:54 before Alex Jensen found the back of the net at 6:13 to give the Cardinals what would appear to be a comfortable three-goal lead.
Morrisville's Joe Santino tallied a power-play goal at 10:54 to get the Mustangs on the board before Ryan Marcuz's sixth of the season at 13:04 brought Morrisville within one.
The Cardinals responded at 17:11 with a power-play goal from Barry Roytman to create a bit of breathing room, but two minutes later Morrisville's Marc-Antoine Chaput scored an extra-attacker goal to make it a one-goal game in the final minute of play.
Gorman finished the night with a goal and three assists while defenseman Rich Botting added a pair of assists. Roytman's third of the year was the eventual game winner.
Plattsburgh State (6-0-1, 6-0-1 SUNYAC) held a 38-31 advantage in shots on goal and went 3-for-7 on the power play. Morrisville (1-6-1, 1-6-1 SUNYAC) was 1-for-5 on the power play.
Cardinals' goaltender Mathieu Cadieux made 28 saves in the win while Christopher Azzano stopped 34 shots in the loss for the Mustangs.
The Cardinals will take a break from league play to host the 16th Annual PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut next weekend at the Stafford Ice Arena. The tournament opens Friday with Norwich and Middlebury at 4 p.m. before the Cardinals meet the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship games will follow on Saturday at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.
