MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Four third period goals allowed the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team to run away with a 7-1 win at Morrisville State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Friday night at the Morrisville State IcePlex.
Dillan Fox opened the scoring with at 7:12 of the first period with his second of the season from Alex Jensen to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Alex Jensen buried his own rebound to make it 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals. With 1:06 left in the opening stanza, Luke Baleshta made it a three-goal game with an unassisted short-handed goal.
A sluggish second period by the Cardinals gave Morrisville a chance to get back in the game. The Mustangs cut the deficit to 3-1 on Zach Baker's short-handed goal with 2:24 gone in the period. But despite only a slight 13-11 edge in shots on goal for Plattsburgh State, the Cardinals were able to keep the Mustangs from getting any closer.
The Cardinals regained a three-goal lead at 8:17 of the third period on Ryan Farnan's unassisted marker. Connor Gorman followed with a tip-in from Barry Roytman at the 12:24 mark to stretch the Cardinals' lead to 5-1. Power-play goals by Mark Constantine and Adam Scuglia rounded out a period dominated by Plattsburgh State.
Alex Jensen led the Cardinals' offense Friday evening with a goal and two assists. Fox, Farnan and Roytman chipped in two points apiece.
Plattsburgh State finished the night with a 56-16 advantage in shots on goal, including a 28-1 margin in the third period. The Mustangs struggled to stay out of the penalty box, taking 15 penalties for 38 minutes, but the Cardinals were only able to convert two of 11 power-play opportunities. Morrisville went 0-for-3 on the power play.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 5-0-1 on the year and in conference play. Morrisville's record drops to 1-5-1 overall, with all seven games coming against SUNYAC opponents.
Mathieu Cadieux allowed one goal on 16 shots to earn the win for Plattsburgh State. Morrisville's Christopher Azzano made 49 saves in the loss.
The Cardinals will go for the weekend sweep tomorrow night when the same two teams meet at 7 p.m. to close out the two-game series.
