FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team was able to withstand pressure from the Blue Devils in the third to hold on for a 4-2 victory at Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday night.
A strong first period gave the nationally-ranked No. 3 Cardinals a commanding 3-0 lead through the first 20 minutes. With 3:01 gone in the game, Mark Constantine tallied his third of the year on the backhand to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead.
Just 1:25 later, the Cardinals (4-0-0, 4-0-0 SUNYAC) extended the lead on Dakota Mason's first collegiate goal from Kyle Hall. Connor Gorman made it a three-goal advantage for Plattsburgh State, tipping in his first of the year for the eventual game-winning goal just as a power play expired at 17:27 of the first.
Fredonia (1-3-0, 1-2-0 SUNYAC) got one back at 6:23 of the second on an unassisted goal from Jared Wynia, but the Cardinals quickly regained some momentum when Luke Baleshta picked up his first of the year at the 7:11 mark.
The Blue Devils caught a break in the third period when the puck deflected off a Plattsburgh player and over the line to bring Fredonia within two. Travis Fernley was credited with the goal at 2:23 of the third.
Fredonia continued to fight in the third, outshooting the Cardinals 13-8 in the final period, but were unable to get any closer.
Plattsburgh State finished the night with a 28-24 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinals went 0-for-1 on the power play while the Blue Devils went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Mathieu Cadieux earned his fourth win with 22 saves for the Cardinals. Fredonia's Chris Eiserman recorded 24 stops in the loss.
The Cardinals close out the road trip tomorrow night at Buffalo State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
