Box Score

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Two early goals by Jared Docking set the tone as the nationally-ranked No. 9 Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team defeated Skidmore, 7-1, Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The non-conference matchup was the first college hockey game to be hosted at the Glens Falls Civic Center since Global Spectrum entered the building in 2008.

An early Plattsburgh power play set the stage for Jared Docking’s sixth of the season to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 3:02 mark of the first period. Alex Jensen threw a shot to the front of the net that deflected to Docking, who beat Skidmore goaltender Ben Freiberg on his left side.

Docking struck again on the power play at 8:32 off some pretty passing by Luke Baleshta and Kevin Emmerling to give Plattsburgh an early two-goal lead.

Mark Constantine made it 3-0 in favor of Plattsburgh State (9-4-1, 6-1-1 SUNYAC) when Connor Gorman’s pass from down low found Constantine in front for the sophomore forward’s sixth of the year at 13:49.

Andrew Smith opened the scoring in the second period at the 3:52 mark to give the Cardinals a four-goal cushion. Barry Roytman connected with Docking in the near circle before Docking’s cross-ice pass set up Smith for his second collegiate goal.

The Thoroughbreds (5-6-2, 4-4-1 ECAC East) were finally able to break through as Skidmore caught Plattsburgh in a line change. The puck bounced off a Plattsburgh defender and Tim Colvin made the Cardinals pay, coming in all alone and beating Mathieu Cadieux for his first tally of the year at 8:31 of the second.

It was all Plattsburgh the rest of the way as Jake Mooney got in the mix late in the second to stretch the lead to 5-1. Dillan Fox ripped a shot that ricocheted off the pipes at 11:29 of the final stanza for some insurance before Zach Popp fought through the Skidmore defense at 12:54 to net his first collegiate goal.

The Cardinals outshot the Thoroughbreds, 38-28. Plattsburgh went 2-for-3 on the power play while Skidmore finished the night 0-for-4.

Cadieux improves to 6-4-1 on the year with 27 saves for the Cardinals. Freiberg recorded 31 stops in the loss for Skidmore, dropping to 2-1-0.

Plattsburgh wraps up the weekend Saturday night with a non-conference game at Castleton State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
