Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. – A little less than one day removed from a tough overtime loss, the Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team made sure they wouldn’t need an extra session to settle things against Fredonia State.
As it stood, the Cardinals put the game away long before the final horn sounded.
John Perez led a balanced Plattsburgh State attack with 12 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Cardinals thrash Fredonia State 72-47 on Saturday afternoon at Steele Hall.
A smothering defense employed by the Cardinals limited the Blue Devils (6-11, 2-9 SUNYAC) to a woeful 14-of-56 (25 percent) mark from the field in the one-sided affair. Plattsburgh State (12-6, 7-3 SUNYAC) forced 24 turnovers and went 26-of-58 (44.8 percent) from the field in the clobbering.
Perez began the victimization of the Blue Devils early, recording the first four points of the game before Chris Manning went to work. The junior scored the next six points for Plattsburgh State on a pair of three-point plays that gave the Cardinals a 10-2 lead less than 2:30 into the tilt.
The only real threat the Blue Devils presented was when they went on a 10-4 run to pull within five, 17-12, with 10:28 to go in the opening stanza.
Responding with a 9-0 run of their own, the Cardinals took the wind out of Fredonia’s sails for the remainder of the game and would never see their lead dip below eight points for the rest of the bout.
Perez proved to be a large part of the Plattsburgh State wrecking crew in the first half, scoring eight points and pulling down eight rebounds in that span. Plattsburgh State’s defensive game plan went off without a hitch, as they held Fredonia to a 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) mark from the field in the first half.
Trying time and time again to get back into the game, the Blue Devils jacked up shot after shot that missed their marks. In the first 20 minutes of action, Fredonia State went 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) from three-point range, but were within 10 at the break thanks to an 8-of-8 performance at the charity stripe.
With just 1:03 gone in the deciding frame, Tyrone Clark made it a 33-25 Plattsburgh State lead, but an 11-0 run featuring scores from four different Cardinals more or less put the game on ice.
Kalik Parker gave the Cardinals their largest advantage of the game after he drilled a long-range basket that made things 58-30 in favor of the visitors with 8:18 to go.
From a scoring standpoint, Parker led the way as he tallied a game-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Manning also reached double figures, scoring 12 in the rout. All told, 11 of the 16 Plattsburgh State players that recorded playing time registered at least one points.
The Blue Devils were led by Dalton Kashmer who tallied nine points and a team-high six rebounds. As a team, Fredonia State excelled at the free throw line, hitting 84.2 percent (16-of-19) of their attempts from that distance. They also out-rebounded Plattsburgh State 42-41.
Next weekend will feature the final pair of regular season road games for the Cardinals. A road trip to Oneonta is on the docket for Friday with the Cardinals and Red Dragons set for an 8 p.m. tip off.
