PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team scored three first half goals en route to its second straight shutout and a 3-0 win against Lyndon State to claim the 2012 Cardinal Classic Championship.
It appeared to be a case of déjà vu early in the game as Mike Payne was taken down inside the box, drawing a penalty kick. Payne buried the kick in the fifth minute to give the Cardinals an early lead.
Fabian Chaparro tallied his second of the season in the 11
th minute on a strike from right outside the box. Joe Aratari assisted on the goal. Aratari added his own six minutes later when he tapped in his own rebound to round out the scoring for Plattsburgh.
The Cardinals (2-0-0) carried play throughout much out the night, finishing the night with 29 shots.
Andy Heighington earned his second win without having to make a save in the first half. John Toper started the second half in the Plattsburgh net, making a big glove save off a shot by Lyndon State’s Eric Nelson. Zack Kruizenga finished up the game in the Cardinals’ net but did not face a shot.
Jason Gray took the loss, making seven saves in the first half for Lyndon State (0-2-0). Jason Marks took over in the second half and stopped all five shots he faced.
Payne, Nick Parrella and Nick Pourakis represented Plattsburgh on the All-Tournament Team. Skidmore’s Adam Beek and Aldin Medunjanin were also honored on the team. Skidmore’s Andy Ringler was named Defensive Most Valuable Player while Plattsburgh’s Fabian Chaparro was recognized as the Offensive Most Valuable Player.
With the win Cardinals’ Head Coach Chris Waterbury sits at 399 career coaching victories. Waterbury and company will look for number 400 Wednesday at Norwich. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
Skidmore 2, Johnson State 0
Skidmore netted two goals in the first half Saturday against Johnson State to finish off a perfect weekend at the 2012 Cardinal Classic.
Ike Okpoebo put the Thoroughbreds on the board at 15:09 of the first half from Joe Phalen before Gildas Girimana found the back of the net in the 36
th minute from Andrew Pertsov.
The two goals were all Skidmore (2-0-0) would need as the Thoroughbreds dominated Johnson State (0-2-0) with a 24-0 advantage in shots. Skidmore also drew 11 corner kicks.
Johnson State goaltender Alex Pakatar recorded seven saves in the loss. Eli Kisselbach got the easy win, manning the Skidmore net for 82:45. Danny Ebenstein finished out the night in goal for the Thoroughbreds.
