PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  – The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team (14-4-2, 12-1-2 ECAC West) scored two goals in the third period to skate to a 3-1 win against SUNY Cortland (4-12-1, 2-10-1 ECAC West) Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals got on the board first at 18:58 of the first period when Emma Rutherford shot from in front found the back of the net. Jenny Kistner assisted on Rutherford’s ninth of the season.

Cortland tied it up at 7:45 of the second when Gina Tomei scored on a scrum in front of the net for her first of the year. The goal was unassisted.

Despite dominating on the shot clock, it took until midway through the third period for Plattsburgh to break through and regain the lead. Ashton Hogan tipped in a shot from the point by Helen Giroux at 11:46. Alyssa Parke was also credited with an assist on the go-ahead goal.

Less than four minutes later, Kistner added a power-play goal to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. Teal Gove and Shannon Stewart assisted on Plattsburgh’s third goal of the afternoon.

The Cardinals fired 60 shots on goal while the Red Dragons finished the day with 14. Cortland’s Katie Double was outstanding in net, turning away 57 shots. Plattsburgh’s Sydney Aveson recorded 13 saves in her 13th win of the season.

Houle’s 200th victory is one more accolade to add to an already impressive resume. In nine seasons at the helm, Houle has compiled a record of 200-35-16. In addition to winning back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008, he has led the Cardinals to seven NCAA tournament appearances and two ECAC Women’s West Championships. Houle’s incredible winning percentage of 83 percent is the highest among all men’s and women’s active coaches across all divisions.

Plattsburgh returns to action tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the weekend series against SUNY Cortland. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
