PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team (15-2-4, 10-1-1 SUNYAC) held on for a 1-0 win Saturday night against Buffalo State (10-10-2, 6-6-1 SUNYAC) to give Head Coach Bob Emery his 500
th career win in front of a sellout crowd of 2,068 at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Despite a 42-15 Plattsburgh advantage in shots on goal, the only offense that mattered came in the final minute of the first period. Ryan Craig carried the puck into the Bengals zone and sent a pass to Mark Constantine who was positioned in the slot. Buffalo State goaltender Kevin Carr made the save on Constantine’s shot before Jake Mooney skated in from the right side of the net to take two shots of his own. Carr made the save on the first Mooney shot, but the second one found the back of the net to give Plattsburgh the only goal of the night with 44 seconds remaining in the period.
The Bengals had a golden opportunity to tie it up midway through the second period when Matt MacLeod and Nick Jensen were whistled for back-to-back penalties to give Buffalo State a 5-on-3 advantage for 52 seconds. But the Plattsburgh penalty kill answered the call, killing off both Bengals’ power plays to maintain the one-goal lead. The Cardinals’ penalty kill continues to be the best in Division III at 92.3 percent.
Carr did all he could between the pipes for Buffalo State, recording 41 saves in the loss. Plattsburgh’s Mathieu Cadieux turned away all 15 shots he faced to earn his third shutout and improve to 12-2-3.
Emery’s 500
th win can now be added to the long list of accomplishments of one of the greatest coaches in Division III hockey. Emery, who is in his twenty-third season as Head Coach of the Cardinals, has compiled a record of 500-156-53. He has led Plattsburgh to two National Championships, 15 NCAA tournament appearances and 13 SUNYAC Championships. Emery’s career .743 winning percentage in the fourth-highest in NCAA history across all divisions and his 500 wins rank fourth among active Division III coaches. With tonight’s victory, he becomes only the fifth coach to reach the 500-win plateau exclusively at the Division III level.
The Cardinals, who remain just one point behind Oswego State in the SUNYAC standings, will close out the regular season with four conference games on the road. Plattsburgh travels to Brockport and Geneseo next weekend, before heading to Oswego State and Cortland in two weeks.
