PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Ryan Craig scored two goals as the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team (14-2-4, 9-1-1 SUNYAC) defeated Fredonia State (10-7-3, 5-4-3 SUNYAC), 3-2, in overtime Friday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Plattsburgh special teams generated all the offense through the first two periods. Ryan Craig gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 14:44 mark of the first period with a power-play goal from Jake Mooney and Alex Jensen.
With Plattsburgh down a skater due to an Alex Brenton penalty, Jared Docking made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal for his fifth of the year. Matt MacLeod and Mike Grace picked up assists on the goal.
The Blue Devils battled back in the third period to give the Cardinals a scare. Stephen Castriota lit the lamp early in the period from Brad Nunn to cut the Cardinals lead in half.
Mat Hehr tied it up with the 1:48 remaining in regulation, knocking home Ian Cosgrove’s rebound. Brian Doust also assisted on the game-tying goal.
But with their backs against the wall, the Cardinals responded just 1:12 into the overtime. Craig netted his second of the night from Mark Constantine to stretch Plattsburgh’s unbeaten streak to 13 games.
Plattsburgh finished the night with 39 shots while Fredonia took 28. Fredonia goaltender Mark Friesen recorded 36 saves in the loss. Plattsburgh’s Mathieu Cadieux turned away 26 of the 28 shots he faced to improve to 11-2-3.
Plattsburgh will be looking to avenge an early-season loss tomorrow night as Buffalo State comes to town for the final home game of the regular season. The Cardinals will honor their senior class prior to game, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
