OSWEGO, N.Y. - The offensive woes continue for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team as the Cardinals dropped a 3-0 decision at Oswego State in front of a sellout crowd of 3,000 at the Campus Center Friday night. With one game remaining in the regular season, Plattsburgh (16-4-4, 11-3-1 SUNYAC) will finish in second place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings. Oswego (20-2-2, 13-0-2 SUNYAC) secures the top seed with tonight's victory.
Jesse McConney gave Oswego an early 1-0 lead when he scored off the face-off at 6:06 of the first period. Tyler Leimbrock assisted on the game-winner.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead at 17:21 of the opening period when Jon Whitelaw one-timed a pass from Luke Moodie to beat Plattsburgh's goaltender Mathieu Cadieux. Paul Rodrigues also picked up an assist on Whitelaw's team-leading 16th goal of the season.
With 42 seconds remaining in the second period, the Cardinals were given a golden opportunity when Oswego's Luke Moodie and Paul Rodrigues were whistled for penalties. But Plattsburgh could not find a way to score and ended the period still down by two goals.
The Cardinals took the ice in the third period with a long power play that carried over from the previous period - 1:18 with a two-man advantage followed by a 5-on-4 power play for two minutes. Again Plattsburgh came up empty.
To add insult to injury, Oswego's Chris Ayotte put the game away at 7:05 of the third with a power-play goal from Zack Joshepher and Whitelaw.
Oswego slightly outshot Plattsburgh, 28-27. The Cardinals finished the night 0-for-7 on the power play while the Lakers were 1-for-4.
Cadieux recorded 25 saves in the loss. Oswego's Andrew Hare turned away all 27 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season at Cortland Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
