Brooks Sets New Career Assists Record as Plattsburgh Tops New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Ketema Brooks became the new all-time assists leader Tuesday as the Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team defeated SUNY New Paltz, 65-58. With the win, the Cardinals take possession of seventh place with two games remaining in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule.
 
Brooks finished with three assists in the Plattsburgh victory to push his career total to 372. With 13:48 remaining in the first half, the senior guard assisted on an Ezra Hodgson three-pointer, surpassing the previous mark of 370 set by Dennis Turner from 1995-98.
 
Plattsburgh (8-15, 6-10 SUNYAC) was led by Shavar Fields and John Perez. Fields shot 6-for-12 from the field and 2-for-4 from the line to finish the night with a team-high 14 points. He also grabbed seven boards. Perez picked up a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Perez scored 12 of his 13 points in the first half to help give the Cardinals an 11-point cushion at the half.
 
Harris Wichard paced the Hawks (8-16, 5-12 SUNYAC) with a game-high 20 points. Wichard also led his team with six rebounds. Matt Devine went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and chipped in 12 points.
 
New Paltz struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 23.1 percent. Meanwhile, the Cardinals were consistent shooters, hitting 13 of their 29 shots (44.8 percent) in the first half and finishing the game with a 48.1 shooting percentage.
 
With 6:36 remaining in the game, Plattsburgh held a 20-point edge but New Paltz wasn’t done just yet. The Hawks outscored the Cardinals 19-8 in the final six minutes of play, shaving the deficit to seven points.
 
Plattsburgh hits the road for its final two games of the regular season. The Cardinals travel to Brockport on Friday for an 8 p.m. start before wrapping up the weekend at Geneseo on Saturday at 4 p.m.
