GENESEO, N.Y. - Two goals in the first five minutes would prove to be enough as the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team (16-3-4, 11-2-1 SUNYAC) outlasted the Geneseo Ice Knights (12-11-1, 6-8-1 SUNYAC), 2-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Saturday night.
Plattsburgh attacked early as Mike Cassidy gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with just 57 seconds gone in the game. Cassidy deflected a Preston Kaye shot, beating Geneseo goaltender Cory Gershon for his third of the year.
Nick Jensen put the Cardinals up by two at the 4:38 mark of the first with a power-play goal from Kyle Taylor and Jared Docking.
The two-goal lead would hold until about midway through the third period, when Geneseo's Jonathan Redlick tallied his sixth of the season with assists from Carson Schell and Zachary Vit. From that point forward, Plattsburgh had to weather the storm as momentum was on the side of the Ice Knights due in part to two penalties drawn by Kyle Kudroch in the final three minutes of the game.
Plattsburgh's Mathieu Cadieux was the difference maker, stopping 24 of 25 shots to improve to 13-3-3. Gershon recorded 21 saves for the Ice Knights in the loss.
Two games remain in the regular season for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh travels to SUNYAC leader Oswego for a conference showdown on Friday before heading to Cortland on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
