Elmira Halts Plattsburgh's Unbeaten Streak

Boxscore

ELMIRA, N.Y.  - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team (13-4-2, 11-1-2 ECAC West) saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as Elmira (16-2-1, 11-1-0 ECAC West) defeated the Cardinals 2-1 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West Division matchup.

The two teams played a scoreless 36 minutes of hockey before Elmira was able to snag the first goal. Plattsburgh's Chelsea VanGlahn was whistled for a tripping penalty, giving the Soaring Eagles at power-play opportunity at 15:12 of the second period. Elmira's Ashley Ryan made the Cardinals pay, scoring her seventh of the year from Kathryn Walker and Lisa Marshall at the 16:11 mark.

Ryan struck again at 7:44 of the third period to give Elmira a 2-0 lead. Tanis Lamoureux and Haley Welch assisted on Ryan's second of the afternoon. But Elmira's two-goal lead didn't last for long as Jenny Kistner brought the Cardinals within one at the 8:51 mark. Teal Gove and Shannon Stewart picked up assists on the power-play goal.

Unfortunately that was as close as Plattsburgh would get despite pulling goaltender Sydney Aveson for the extra attacker in the final 24 seconds of the game.

Elmira held a 35-32 advantage in shots on goal. Aveson recorded 33 saves while Elmira goaltender Lisa Marshall turned away 31 shots to improve to 6-0-0.

The Cardinals remain in the top spot of the ECAC Women's West Division standings with 24 points. With today's win, Elmira hops over R.I.T. to claim the no. 2 spot with 22 points while the Tigers fall to third place with 21 points.

Plattsburgh returns home next weekend for a two-game series against SUNY Cortland on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are set for 3 p.m.
