Women's Basketball Slowed by Bengals

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team (6-8, 3-6 SUNYAC) fell in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action against Buffalo State (14-2, 7-2 SUNYAC), 69-62 Saturday.
 
Leading scorer Kathleen Payne and Brooke Reifinger’s scoring kept the Cardinals within touching distance throughout the game. Payne recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. Reifiniger scored 15 points on 7-of-19 shooting. Jalen Hart enjoyed another strong game off the bench scoring six points and snatching a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
The Bengals started off strong by jumping out to a 16-4 lead just 2:49 into the game. The Cardinals came back strong and a Payne layup with 5:16 remaining in the first half tied the game. The Bengals entered the break leading by four points.
 
The Bengals would keep their halftime lead until the end of the game. The lead grew to as many 11 when Bianca Smiley made free throw with 4:54 left in the game.
 
The Bengals were led by Bianca Smiley, Staci McElroy and Divine Sebuharara. Smiley scored a team-high 24 points and nine rebounds, McElroy went 5-of-7 from the field, good for 16 points and Sebuharara scored 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting.
 
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday January 24 when they visit Middlebury College in non-conference action. Start time is scheduled for 5.30 p.m.
