Strong First Half Lifts Women's Basketball to Victory over Bears

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team (5-6, 3-4 SUNYAC) used an explosive first half at Memorial Hall to defeat SUNY Potsdam (4-9, 2-5 SUNYAC) 68-54 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday.
 
The Cardinals jumped out to a 22-8 lead with 10:26 gone in the contest and went into the break leading by 17 points.
 
Potsdam rallied in the second half, using a five minute 15-4 run to reduce the deficit to 12 points, but could not get any closer to the Cardinals.
 
The Bears struggled at shooting all game, going 6-of-31 in the first half and 28.8 percent for the game, while the Cardinals shot 36.9 percent for the game in the win.
 
Kathleen Payne returned from injury to score a game-high 25 points on 11-for-20 shooting, 10 rebounds and six steals. Brooke Reifinger added 10 points of her own on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Kerri Salisbury and Dana Nucaro also helped the Cardinal offense by scoring eight and seven points respectively.
 
Katy Briedis led the Bears in the losing effort, scoring 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and two assists. Sophie Parks added 10 points, going 3-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
 
The Cardinals return to Memorial Hall Tuesday Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. when the host Sage College in non-conference action.
