Cardinals Romp Fredonia in Regular-Season Finale

Plattsburgh hosts SUNYAC quarterfinals Tuesday against New Paltz

FREDONIA, N.Y. —
The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team bounced back from a Friday overtime loss and defeated Fredonia, 78-57, to close out the regular season Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference action.

Chris Ruiz and Carl Munnerlyn led the Cardinals in scoring with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Errol Daniyan was also in double digits with 10 points. Ruiz is now just seven points shy of becoming Plattsburgh's second all-time leading scorer.

Efficient shooting helped lead the Cardinals to the win. For the game, Plattsburgh shot nearly 55 percent, including 8-for-12 from three-point land in the first half, which helped them get out to a 44-27 lead at halftime. The Cardinals took the lead for good when Munnerlyn hit a three-pointer to put them up, 7-6.

Twenty of Munnerlyn's 21 points came in the first half, as he shot 7-for-9, including 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.

The Blue Devils were led by Kevin Mitchell's 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting in 13 minutes off the bench. He also had a game-high four steals.

Fredonia's season ends with a 6-18 overall record, 3-15 SUNYAC. With the win, the Cardinals close the regular season with a 16-9 overall record, including 12-6 in the SUNYAC.

Plattsburgh will now turn its attention to the SUNYAC tournament. The defending SUNYAC champion Cardinals earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will host No. 6 New Paltz at Memorial Hall in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. Plattsburgh swept the season series from the Hawks with an 87-73 win at home on Dec. 3 and a 76-62 win at New Paltz on Jan. 29.
