BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dana Nucaro and Kathleen Payne each recorded double-doubles against Buffalo State Friday night, but they had little support as the Cardinals fell on the road against the Bengals in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game, 64-49.
Nucaro had 11 points and 11 rebeounds in 18 minutes off the bench, while Payne led the Cardinals and tied a game-high of 19 points, also with 11 rebounds. It is the ninth time the freshman has been Plattsburgh’s leading scorer in a game this season.
Barb Kiliszek paced the Buffalo State offense with a team-best 19 points. She also sparked the Bengals defensively with six steals. Staci McElroy backed up Kiliszek with 15 points.
The Cardinals played even with the Bengals in the second half, but their first-half deficit was too much to overcome. Second-half scoring was 30-30, but the Bengals held a 15-point advantage with a 34-19 halftime lead.
The first-half difference was the result of shooting woes from the floor for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals shot just 6-for-27, 22 percent, in the first half, but improved to 34.5 percent in the second.
With the win, Buffalo State improves to 14-9, 9-8 in the conference. Plattsburgh falls to 7-16, 4-13 in the SUNYAC.
Plattsburgh travels to take on Fredonia in the final SUNYAC game of the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m.
