PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The top two teams in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) proved why they are just that Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena, as the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team battled Oswego to a 2-2 tie.

Oswego (7-1-2, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) struck first at 9:16 of the first period when Jon Whitelaw knocked home a puck in the crease to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Paul Rodrigues and Luke Moodie assisted on the lone goal of the first.

Paul Puglisi tied it up at the 1:15 mark of the second period with a shot from the just inside the blue line that beat Oswego goaltender Andrew Hare.

The Lakers pulled ahead at 6:06 of the second as Chris Ayotte scored his third of the year from Matt Singleton and David Titanic but that lead wouldn’t hold for long as Plattsburgh (5-2-2, 5-1-1 SUNYAC) evened the score at 7:21. Alex Jensen netted the game-tying goal with an assist from Patrick Jobb.

The Cardinals held a slight 37-36 advantage in shots on goal, including an 18-9 edge in the third period. Both goaltenders gave stellar performances to keep the game knotted at 2-2. Hare recorded 35 saves while Plattsburgh netminder Mathieu Cadieux made 34 stops.

Plattsburgh will host Cortland Saturday night at 7 p.m. in its final conference game of the first semester. The Plattsburgh men’s hockey team invites fans to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game Saturday night as the Cardinals join forces with the Chefy’s Toys for Tots campaign. Designated bins will be located throughout the Field House lobby for toy drop-off. All donated toys will be distributed to Clinton County area youth.
