PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - A 32-point effort from Kathleen Payne could not stop the Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team from dropping an 89-77 decision to St. Lawrence in the team’s home opener.
Payne went 8-19 and 14-14 from the free throw line, but the Saints shot an impressive 75 percent on 3 point shots in the second half to pull away from the Cardinals.
Kelly Legg led the way for the Saints with 24 points, including going 8-8 from the line. Casey Capello helped Legg out with 16 points of her own, which included going 3-3 from outside the arc.
Lindsey Larivee was the only other Cardinal player to hit double digit points with 12, while Brittany Marshall hit nine points on 3-5 shooting in an energetic outing. Catherine Cassidy led the Cardinals in assists with seven, while Payne and Yazmin Lewis collected six and five rebounds respectively.
Both teams were impressive from the free throw line, St. Lawrence going 23-28 and Plattsburgh going 25-30.
The Cardinals hit the road this weekend to open their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule. Plattsburgh takes on Cortland in a 6 p.m. start Friday. Saturday’s opponent will be Oswego for a 2 p.m. start.
