PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State goaltender Mathieu Cadieux posted his first shutout of the season as the Cardinal men’s hockey team defeated Geneseo, 2-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Stafford Ice Arena Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Vick Schlueter scored a power-play goal from Patrick Jobb and Barry Roytman at 2:50 of the second to give the Cardinals a lead they would relinquish. Matt MacLeod tallied an unassisted goal just 2:09 later to put Plattsburgh (5-1-0, 5-1-0 SUNYAC) up 2-0.
The Cardinals outshot Geneseo (4-5-0, 3-4-0 SUNYAC) 34-23, including a 12-4 edge in the first period. Plattsburgh went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Ice Knight came up empty, going 0-for-3.
Cadieux made 11 stops in the third period, finishing the night with 23 saves. Geneseo netminder Adrian Rubeniuk recorded 32 saves in the loss.
Tonight served as Plattsburgh’s final tune-up for the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut hosted by Middlebury College. The Cardinals, who won last year’s ShootOut, will face Norwich on Friday at 4 p.m. in a rematch of the 2011 NCAA Quarterfinals. Middlebury and Elmira will face-off in the second game at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship games will follow on Saturday at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.
