Women's Hockey Dominates in 9-1 Rout at Chatham

Emma Rutherford picked up four points in Plattsburgh's 9-1 win at Chatham Saturday afternoon.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Nine different players scored goals as the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team defeated Chatham, 9-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West contest Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Emma Rutherford led the way with a goal and three assists as Plattsburgh improves to 3-0-1 overall and in conference play.

The Cardinals opened the scoring at 2:07 of the first on Erika Shaubel's second of the year from Morgan MacInnis and Shannon Stewart. Just 1:27 later, Helen Giroux netted the eventual game-winner from Emma Rutherford and Teal Gove.

Plattsburgh's offense unloaded in the second period, scoring five goals - two of which were on the power-play. Stewart, Gove, Amber Welch, Justine Fisher and Ashton Hogan each found the back of the net to stretch the Cardinal lead to 7-0 after two periods of play.

Chatham (2-1-2, 0-1-0 ECAC West) spoiled the shutout at 3:47 of the third as Breanne Mercanti scored his first of the year. Ashley Reid and Jessica Carlson assisted on the Cougars' only goal of the afternoon. 

The Cardinals tacked on two more goals later in the period. Melissa McIver scored on the power-play at 18:07 while Rutherford followed with a goal of her own 17 seconds later.

McIver, MacInnis, Gove and Fisher each register three points apiece. Plattsburgh outshot Chatham, 59-9, including a 25-3 margin in the first period.

Sydney Aveson recorded eight saves in her third win of the year. Megan Buchanan suffered the loss for Chatham, making 33 stops in the first 30:32. Kaitlynn Smith took over in the Cougars' net for the final 29:28 stopping 17 shots.

Plattsburgh returns to the ice tomorrow at noon to wrap up the two-game series at Chatham.
