MORRISVILLE, N.Y.  – After a flurry of goals in the first period, the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team emerged on the winning end of its season opener, defeating Morrisville, 6-4, at the Morrisville State College IcePlex.

Morrisville struck first with a power-play goal at 4:58 by Curtis Renaud. The Cardinals responded at 6:21 with a power-play goal of their own by Vick Schlueter. Plattsburgh took a 2-1 lead at 11:17 of the first when freshman Mark Constantine tallied his first of two goals, but the lead was short-lived as Renaud tied it up just 11 seconds later. The Mustangs grabbed the lead on Jaime Nelson’s first of the year at 13:48, but a late goal from Plattsburgh’s Barry Roytman sent the teams to the locker room tied at 3-3.

Things calmed down in the next 20 minutes as Constantine scored the lone goal of the second period, an unassisted power-play goal to put Plattsburgh on top 4-3.

Kyle Kudroch netted two goals in the third period, including the game-winner to secure the Cardinals’ first win of the year.

Plattsburgh (1-0-0, 1-0-0 SUNYAC) held a 42-35 advantage in shots and went 3-for-6 on the power play. Morrisville (1-1-0, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) went 1-for-2 on its power-play opportunities.

Mathieu Cadieux made 31 saves in his debut for Plattsburgh.  Morrisville’s Colin Breen suffered the loss, recording 35 stops in the first 47:39. Christopher Azzano turned away the only shot he faced in the final 12:12 for the Mustangs.
