Cardinals Defeat Blue Knights

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Geneseo Blue Knights pulled within striking distance of the Plattsburgh State men's basketball during the final three minutes of the game, but the Cardinals persevered and walked off with a victory, 72-69. Plattsburgh now holds a 17-7 overall record, 12-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, while Geneseo drops to 7-17 for the season, 6-11 in the conference.

Abe Miller tossed up a layup with 3:16 left to play and put the Blue Knights just one point behind their host (66-67), that was until Chris Ruiz hit a jumper and moved the Cardinals ahead (69-66) just 18 seconds later.

The next point from either side would come over a minute and a half later when Errol Daniyan sank a free-throw for Plattsburgh. Daniyan would sink two more just 16 seconds later to place the score at 72-66 in Plattsburgh's favor. Mike Hoy would try to salvage the game for Geneseo with a trey seconds later, followed by a full timeout by both teams. However, the Blue Knights would not be successful in getting another shot off before the buzzer and Plattsburgh picked up its 10th win at home this season.

Ruiz topped the Cardinals with 20 points during the contest, followed by Carl Munnerlyn with 19. Munnerlyn went 5-for-5 from behind the arc. Daniyan tossed up 18 points and tied Steve Thomas for a team-high eight rebounds each. Thomas also dished out a game-high five assists.

For Geneseo, Brandon Simpson racked up 19 points and Miller contributed 16, along with 11 rebounds. Kyle Stevens added 13 points and 12 boards to the mix.

The Cardinals close out their regular season schedule with a home game against Brockport tomorrow at 4 p.m.
